Ruijin Hospital, affiliated with Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine and founded in 1907 as the Sainte-Marie Hospital, is one of China's premier comprehensive academic hospitals, holding an A++ grade in the National Public Hospital Performance Assessment for five consecutive years and ranking among the national top five in comprehensive hospital rankings.

It is world-renowned as the birthplace of the Shanghai Protocol — the ATRA plus arsenic trioxide combination that transformed acute promyelocytic leukemia from a deadly disease into one that is more than 90% curable — a breakthrough developed at its Shanghai Institute of Hematology that is now the global standard of care. Ruijin also leads China in endocrinology and metabolic disease research through the National Clinical Research Center for Metabolic Diseases, and was the first hospital in China to diagnose primary aldosteronism (1957) and to standardize continuous glucose monitoring protocols.
