About the Hospital
Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center (ZOC) of Sun Yat-sen University in Guangzhou is the largest public ophthalmic hospital in China and the only eye-specialty hospital directly administered by China's National Health Commission. Its clinical roots trace back to the ophthalmology teaching group formed in 1953, and the eye hospital was formally established at its Ouzhuang site in 1965. In 1983 the Ministry of Health approved creation of the Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center, bringing together the Eye Hospital, the Ophthalmic Research Institute and the Division of Preventive Ophthalmology; the center adopted its current name under Sun Yat-sen University in 2001.
The center operates two campuses — the original Ouzhuang campus and the Zhujiang New Town campus (opened in 2018 with roughly 82,000 square meters of floor area) — and offers care across more than 20 ophthalmic subspecialties including cornea, glaucoma, cataract, retina, refractive surgery and pediatric ophthalmology. In recent years annual outpatient volume has exceeded 1.13 million visits with more than 78,000 surgeries performed, and the average length of stay is around 1.5 days. ZOC is estimated to have trained roughly one-fifth of China's practicing ophthalmologists.
As China's sole WHO Collaborating Center for the Prevention of Blindness / eye care, and host to the Asia-Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology (APAO) and the Asia office of the Afro-Asian Council of Ophthalmology, ZOC combines high-volume subspecialty clinical care with research, teaching and blindness-prevention programs. It provides a full spectrum of tertiary care for both common and complex eye diseases and serves patients from across China and abroad.
